A New Resource for Community Blogging Comes to Harrisonburg

Filed under: hbblogs news — admin @ 6:33 pm

Summary: Blogging in Harrisonburg is now more connected and centralized than ever before with hbblogs.com, a site dedicated to serving Harrisonburg bloggers.

Harrisonburg, VA, May 10, 2008—For years now, Harrisonburg has been home to a handful of active and even influential bloggers. Their blogs range the gamut of topics from sports, politics, citizen journalism, community events, personal diaries and many others. But following them all has generally meant visiting each and every site separately, or adding every single feed to an RSS reader. And for those entering the blogging scene in Harrisonburg, there wasn’t really an easy way to join the community and let others know about a new blog.

Last year, that changed when Brent Finnegan of hburgnews.com started hburgblogs.com, a feed aggregator for all the local blogs in the Harrisonburg area. Unfortunately, it never quite worked properly, and many of the area blog posts were either missed or had to be added manually. It was better than nothing certainly, but still left much to be desired.

This year, Mason Wolf, a transplant blogger and freelance web developer from Chattanooga TN, built a new site that takes up where hburgblogs left off. The site, called hbblogs.com, not only aggregates local blog feeds onto one site, but even provides a Wordpress-based hosting solution for people who want to either start a new blog or move an existing one to a local service.

So far, the response from the local blogging community has been extremely positive. The site has only been open to the public since April 30, yet already, 25 blogs and around 500 posts are hosted or aggregated on the site. In time, Wolf hopes that hbblogs will be the first place area residents go whenever they want to enter the rich and interesting local blogging scene.

Harrisonburg Blogs (HBblogs.com) is a community oriented resource designed to connect local residents and interest groups, businesses and organizations. It’s the new Blog Central for the Shenandoah Valley.

  1. Keep up the great work Mason — it’s wonderful to have access to the combination of all of the blogs in one place!
